Federal Government Approves ₦13 Billion For Power Infrastructure Boost In Lagos And Ogun.

The Federal Government of Nigeria has approved a ₦13 billion investment to upgrade power infrastructure in Lagos and Ogun states, aiming to enhance electricity supply and drive industrial growth. The announcement, made by Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu following a Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting chaired by President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday, 13 August 2025, represents a significant step towards tackling Nigeria’s persistent energy challenges.

The funding, part of a broader effort to modernise the nation’s ageing power grid, includes compensation for property owners impacted by the Lagos-Ogun Transmission Project. Supported by a $238 million loan from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), the project will improve electricity reliability along the industrial corridor of Lagos and Ogun, ensuring a stable power supply for manufacturers and businesses. Adelabu noted that the initiative supports the government’s Renewed Hope Agenda, fostering local production and reducing dependence on imports.

Additionally, the FEC approved $34 million and ₦5.2 billion for the procurement of 14 high-capacity power transformers to replace outdated and overloaded units on the national grid. The transformers, comprising two 150MVA, five 100MVA, five 60MVA, and two 30MVA units, will improve voltage stability and transmission capacity, addressing frequent failures in Nigeria’s over 50-year-old grid infrastructure. These upgrades are expected to reduce outages and provide reliable electricity to households, offices, and industries.

The Minister stressed the need for ongoing maintenance and modernisation to prevent grid failures and ensure a consistent power supply. He described the approvals as “good news for Nigerians,” highlighting their potential to boost economic growth, create jobs, and support sustainable development. The public is urged to stay informed through official updates on the project’s progress, as the government remains committed to delivering meaningful improvements in electricity access across the country.
