In a recent consultative meeting held at the Minister of Solid Minerals Development’s office in Abuja, Minister Dele Alake hinted at forthcoming adjustments to the rates of mining licences and associated fees payable by mining operators across the country.
Alake emphasised the necessity of this review to bolster the government’s capacity to reposition the mining sector effectively. He stressed that such adjustments were vital for creating an enabling environment for mining operations and increasing revenue generation for the government.
During the meeting, Alake sought the support of stakeholders for the anticipated increase in fees for mining licences and other related charges. He underlined the importance of engaging industry players in decision-making processes, recognising their pivotal role in the sector.
Regarding the recent revocation of dormant mining licences, Minister Alake clarified that due process and existing laws were followed, with a 30-day restitution window provided for affected operators. He outlined the prescribed restitution fees for various licence categories, offering an avenue for those affected to regularise their status.
In addition to ongoing reforms, the minister highlighted the government’s efforts to sanitise the mining environment through the introduction of mining marshals. These marshals have been deployed in various regions to safeguard legitimate miners and combat illegal mining activities.
The Director-General of the Mining Cadastral Office, Engr. Obadiah Nkom, who chaired the fees review committee, revealed that the committee had recommended new rates aimed at enhancing the competitiveness of the mining sector’s fiscal regime while ensuring affordability for operators.
Representing the stakeholders, President Dele Ayanleke of the Miners Association of Nigeria (MAN) commended the Minister for his proactive approach in advancing the mining sector’s global prominence. Ayanleke expressed support for ongoing reforms and urged the Minister to consider the challenges faced by miners in setting affordable fee rates.
The consultative meeting saw the participation of various stakeholders, including representatives from the Miners Association of Nigeria (MAN), Women in Mining (WIN), and Gemstone Miners Association (GMA), alongside top officials of the ministry and other industry representatives.
