The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has set an ambitious target to enroll 200 million Nigerians into the National Identification Number (NIN) system by 2025.
This announcement was made by Kayode Adegoke, the Head of Corporate Communications at NIMC, during an interview on X Space.
Adegoke revealed that currently, over 105 million NINs have been issued to Nigerians and legal residents. He expressed confidence in reaching the enrollment target within the next one to two years, assuring Nigerians of the commission’s commitment to achieving universal enrollment.
The NIN, serving as a unique identifier for each citizen, has gained significance in various government initiatives aimed at bolstering security, governance, and service delivery.
In response to the growing demand for NIN modifications and enrollments, Adegoke highlighted the implementation of a self-service platform.
This platform allows Nigerians, both domestically and abroad, to conveniently make necessary modifications such as name changes, date of birth updates, and contact information adjustments from their homes or offices using different devices.
Adegoke emphasised the ease and accessibility of the self-service modification portal, urging citizens to leverage this innovative solution.
Furthermore, NIMC recently renewed its collaboration with IDEMIA Smart Identity to upgrade the biometrics system. IDEMIA’s advanced cryptographic and biometric technologies will enhance NIMC’s capability to verify identities, handling up to 1 million 1:1 and 1:N identity verification searches per day.
With the current system initially designed to support 100 million national identity numbers, the upgrade is crucial to accommodating the entire Nigerian population.
IDEMIA affirmed that NIMC is well-positioned to achieve the sustainable development goals outlined by the United Nations for 2030, which prioritise providing legal identity for all individuals worldwide.
