FG Moves To Expand Chinese Investment In Infrastructure And Youth Skills

The Federal Government is taking steps to strengthen its partnership with China in order to boost infrastructure development, technology transfer, and youth capacity building across Nigeria.

This aligns with the administration’s plan to modernise the country’s road network and create more opportunities for young people through technical training.

The Minister of State for Works, Bello Goronyo, recently led a government delegation to China to seek greater involvement of Chinese construction and engineering firms in Nigeria, especially through public private partnerships. He stated that the collaboration would support road rehabilitation efforts, provide essential machinery, and empower youths with relevant technical skills. According to him, “this cooperation will not only improve our infrastructure but also promote youth empowerment and employment.”

During the visit, the delegation met with key Chinese companies including China Harbour Engineering Company, XCMG and China Gezhouba Group Company. These companies expressed interest in expanding their activities in Nigeria by supporting road development projects and investing in skill acquisition programmes for Nigerian youths. The minister encouraged them to enhance their corporate social responsibility efforts and increase their support for technical training.

At China Harbour Engineering Company, discussions focused on increasing investments in highway projects under Nigeria’s Highway Development and Management Initiative. The minister commended the company for its role in the Keffi Akwanga Makurdi Highway project, describing it as a successful model of a public private partnership in Nigeria. He urged the company to take on more road projects and contribute further to job creation and skill development.

The partnership talks also included the supply of road maintenance equipment for the Federal Emergency Road Maintenance Agency to improve efficiency in carrying out repairs nationwide. The government is seeking specialised machinery that will help modernise FERMA’s operations and strengthen the maintenance of the country’s federal road network which spans about thirty six thousand kilometres.

The visit is expected to boost Nigeria’s plans for infrastructure renewal, improved road management systems, and enhanced technology exchange between both countries. The minister said the initiative forms part of a long term strategy to attract global investment and training opportunities for Nigerian youths, especially those interested in construction and engineering.
