Senator Ibikunle Amosun, the former governor of Ogun State, has called for the incorporation of more technical subjects into the secondary school educational system in Nigeria.
This proposition was made during his keynote address at an event themed “You Are Whatever You Want to Be,” organized by the Holy Child College Ikoyi’s old students’ association to commemorate the set of 1969-73 students.
In his speech, Senator Amosun highlighted the crucial role of two “P”s in a student’s journey to success. The first “P” stands for parents, emphasising their significant influence in students’ lives and the importance of respecting family values.
The second “P” signifies peers and those around the students, especially their contemporaries.
He stressed the advantages of their generation, benefiting from technological advancements and support systems that can pave the way for their success.
Senator Amosun referred to technology as “ifa imo,” which can be translated as a modern oracle, and emphasised the guidance it can provide to students in shaping their career paths.
He recalled a time when technical subjects, such as applied electricity and woodworking, were part of the curriculum. These subjects allowed students to explore various interests and determine their career goals based on their preferences.
In conclusion, the former Ogun State Governor stressed that one’s career journey’s difficulty is determined by personal determination and the right attitude. He encouraged students to take control of their careers and make the most of the opportunities presented to them.
Reflecting on the event, some students expressed their inspiration and newfound determination, emphasising the importance of maintaining an open mind and being prepared for multiple income streams.
The program left them with greater confidence, clarity about their career paths, and a belief that success can emerge from unexpected sources.
