Students of the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), have expressed outrage over a midnight raid conducted by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The Student Union Government of FUTA, led by President Olayemi Oluwasoromidayo and General Secretary Sodiq Bashir, issued a statement denouncing the EFCC’s actions. According to the statement, the raid occurred in the South Gate community, where operatives forcibly entered more than three school lodges around 3 am on February 14th.
The incident has sparked memories of a similar intrusion at Obafemi Awolowo University in Ile-Ife, Osun State, where EFCC operatives previously conducted a midnight raid. Despite the ban on night sting operations announced by the EFCC Chairman in November, the recent incident at FUTA has raised concerns about the agency’s disregard for its own directives.
The Student Union emphasized that the arrests were unjust and called for the immediate release of the detained students. They lamented the failure of Nigeria’s authorities to address pressing security issues, expressing disappointment at the EFCC’s contribution to the students’ security threats.
In their statement, the Student Union urged fellow students to remain calm and cooperative while they work towards resolving the situation. They assured students that their safety and well-being are top priorities and promised to provide updates on any developments regarding the investigation.
