Gas Explosion In Port Harcourt Leaves Several Injured.

In a tragic event on Saturday afternoon, a gas explosion in the Orazi axis of Port Harcourt, Rivers State, has critically injured around 20 individuals, including a pregnant woman and four children. The incident occurred near the densely populated area known as ‘Big Tree.’

According to reports, the explosion took place at a local gas refilling shop where a technician was attempting to repair a faulty cylinder. This led to a chain reaction where the initial blast affected other cylinders, causing multiple explosions. The force of the explosions not only caused severe burns to many victims but also shattered the peace of the area, leading to widespread panic among residents and passers-by.

Victims, including local residents and those merely passing through, were quickly transported to the Rivers State University Teaching Hospital in Port Harcourt for urgent medical attention. Many suffered from severe burns, highlighting the intensity of the incident.

The fire from the explosion spread, impacting surrounding buildings, which forced numerous occupants to flee their homes to safety. A relative of one of the victims, speaking anonymously, shared the personal toll of the disaster. “The owner of the shop has been selling gas here for years,” he noted. He recounted the distressing moment when he was informed about his in-laws’ involvement in the blast, stating, “I was just called in the evening about the incident because my sister-in-law and her husband are involved. When my wife picked up the call, her countenance changed immediately.”

He continued, “I asked what happened. She said it was a gas explosion and that her sister is at the Rivers State University Teaching Hospital. I lost my appetite and immediately drove to the hospital. I know how Orazi is; there are many shops scattered all over just for people to survive.”

Another source confirmed the severity of the situation, emphasizing the impact on the community, “A pregnant woman was among those affected. It caused a huge fire, burning houses too. About 20 people were burnt, but thankfully, there were no fatalities. Let the government come to their aid because this is the beginning of the year.”

This incident has sparked calls for increased safety measures in the handling and storage of gas cylinders, particularly in densely populated areas. The community is now looking towards local authorities for support in the aftermath of this devastating event.
