Host Germany Through to the Quarter-Finals with win over Denmark.
Jamal Musiala and Kai Havertz found the back of the net as Euro 2024 hosts Germany progressed to the quarter-finals by defeating Denmark 2-0 in a match interrupted by a spectacular storm. The last-16 clash at Borussia Dortmund’s Westfalenstadion was halted for around 20 minutes late in the first half due to lightning, hail, and heavy rain.
The game saw multiple interventions by the video assistant referee (VAR). Nico Schlotterbeck’s early header was disallowed by VAR, while Denmark’s hopes were dashed in the second half when Joachim Andersen’s goal was ruled out due to an offside call on team-mate Thomas Delaney.
Shortly after Denmark’s disallowed goal, Germany benefited from a VAR decision when referee Michael Oliver awarded a penalty for handball by the unfortunate Andersen. Havertz confidently converted the spot-kick, sending the ball beyond Kasper Schmeichel’s reach, much to the delight of the home fans.
Havertz nearly scored a second goal soon after but missed the target. Germany secured their decisive second goal with just over 20 minutes left, as young star Musiala raced through on the left and slotted the ball into the far corner.
The home crowd remained on their feet, cheering their team on for more goals and celebrating passionately at the final whistle. Germany’s convincing win sets them up to face the winner of Sunday’s match between Spain and surprise package Georgia in the quarter-final scheduled for Friday, 5 July.
