Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has formally declared the Accord Party as his new political platform ahead of the 2026 governorship election, marking one of the most significant political realignments in the state’s recent history.

The governor made the announcement on Tuesday at the Banquet Hall of the Government House, Osogbo, in the presence of national and state leaders of the Accord Party. The event also served as a symbolic unveiling of the political vehicle through which he intends to seek re-election.

According to Adeleke, he officially joined the Accord Party on November 6, 2025, after what he described as weeks of deep consultations with stakeholders and opinion leaders across Osun State. His spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, noted that political stakeholders were already well aware of the factors that led to the governor’s realignment.

Why Adeleke Left His Former Party

Speaking during the declaration, Governor Adeleke emphasized that his defection was driven primarily by ideological alignment. He explained that the Accord Party’s philosophy — especially its emphasis on welfarism — mirrors the core priorities of his administration.

“We opted for the Accord Party because its mission of welfarism aligns with our passionate focus on citizens’ and workers’ welfare,”
— Governor Adeleke

The governor added that since joining the party, he had found its value system and people-centered leadership approach encouraging.

“The focus on people’s welfare should always be at the heart of public leadership. The primary essence of government is the welfare and well-being of the people.”

Unity and Strategy Ahead of the 2026 Election

Adeleke reinforced the need for internal unity as the state gears up for the 2026 governorship race. He urged members of his new party to maintain cohesion, remain inclusive, and work collectively to secure victory.

“We are united in progress and good intentions for the good people of Osun State and Nigeria at large.”

He stressed the importance of inclusive leadership that gives room for all party factions and community blocs, noting that Accord must project stability, harmony, and shared purpose as campaigns intensify.

A New Political Vehicle for Osun State

Positioning Accord as the new home base for Osun citizens across all zones, the governor called on residents to rally behind the platform:

“From Igbomina to Ijeshaland, Ifeland, Osogbo, Iwoland, Modakeke, Gbongan, Igbajo, Ikire, Ikirun, Ede and beyond, this is our party — our new platform for victory come August next year.”

He described the party as the next phase of Osun’s political journey, one designed to consolidate his administration’s achievements, especially those focused on welfare-driven governance.

What This Move Means for Osun’s Political Landscape

Adeleke’s shift to the Accord Party introduces a new dynamic into Osun’s 2026 governorship contest. As a sitting governor joining a party outside the traditional big-two (PDP and APC), his move:

  • strengthens Accord’s presence statewide,

  • reshapes voter expectations,

  • intensifies competition ahead of the polls, and

  • potentially influences political realignments across the South-West.

His decision also signals a broader trend: politicians increasingly prioritising stability and ideological alignment over party size or longstanding affiliations.

A Final Declaration

Concluding his announcement, Adeleke declared:

“In accordance with the will of our stakeholders and in deep respect for the wishes of Osun people, I hereby declare for the Accord Party.”

With this move, Governor Adeleke sets the stage for a high-stakes political season — one that promises to redefine alliances, voter patterns, and the future of governance in Osun State.
