Governor Fintiri Revokes Atiku Abubakar’s ‘Waziri Adamawa’ Title Amid Emirate Reforms

Governor Fintiri Revokes Atiku Abubakar’s ‘Waziri Adamawa’ Title Amid Emirate Reforms.

The Governor of Adamawa State, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, has revoked the traditional title of Wazirin Adamawa held by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, along with other notable figures, following the restructuring of emirates and chiefdoms in the state.

This decision affects not only Atiku but also former Governor Boni Haruna, who held the title of Makama Mubi, and Fintiri himself, who was the Sarki Yaki Mubi. The move comes as part of a wider reorganisation of the traditional system in Adamawa State.

New Traditional Councils to Appoint Titles

Speaking at the coronation ceremony of the newly appointed Chief of Madagali, Governor Fintiri declared that all district heads must now align their loyalty, rights, and privileges with the newly established emirates and chiefdoms.

“As a policy, all traditional titles acquired from the old emirates and chiefdoms are hereby dropped,” Fintiri announced. “The constituted traditional councils of the new emirates and chiefdoms are therefore directed to recommend new titles for approval in line with the statutory dictates of tradition.”

The restructuring has led to the creation of new emirates and chiefdoms, carving out territories from the existing Adamawa and Mubi emirates. This means that all traditional titles previously awarded under these jurisdictions are no longer valid unless reapproved under the new system.

Atiku and Others May Be Reconsidered

As a result of this directive, Fintiri, Atiku, Haruna, and other affected individuals have effectively lost their traditional titles. However, there remains a possibility of reappointment. The Lamido of Adamawa—the custodian of the Adamawa emirate—has the option to submit Atiku’s name, along with other affected titleholders, for reconsideration. Final approval would then rest with the governor.

This landmark decision marks a significant shift in Adamawa’s traditional leadership structure, as the state government seeks to redefine its cultural and administrative framework.
