The House of Representatives passed a bill titled the ‘Widowhood Leave Bill, 2023 (hb.401)’ for its second reading, aiming to implement Widowhood Leave in Nigeria.
Sponsored by Hon. Said Musa Abdullahi from the Bida/gbako/Katcha federal constituency of Niger State, the bill seeks to address the unique challenges faced by widows and widowers.
Abdullahi highlighted the importance of providing time and space for grieving, counseling, and adjustment to new realities for widows and widowers.
He emphasized that such support could significantly contribute to their emotional healing and overall resilience, enabling them to focus on caring for their families and fulfilling cultural and religious obligations.
The proposed legislation, divided into five clauses, specifies the period of leave, eligibility criteria, punishment for violations, and interpretation of terms. Abdullahi noted the absence of explicit provisions for widowhood leave in the Nigerian Labour Act (2004), necessitating a review.
Comparing with other countries, Abdullahi pointed out variations in bereavement leave durations and highlighted cultural practices influencing mourning periods in Nigeria.
He argued for longer widowhood leave periods, considering cultural and religious norms prevalent in the country.
