The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has announced Thursday, May 30th, as a sit-at-home day across the South East region of Nigeria.
This decision, as relayed by IPOB’s Media and Publicity Secretary, Comrade Emma Powerful, aims to honour the memory of those who valiantly fought during the Nigerian civil war from 1967 to 1970.
Mazi Nnamdi OkwuChukwu Kanu, leader of IPOB, has called upon all Biafrans, allies of Biafra, and residents in Biafra Land to observe the sit-at-home and pay tribute to the sacrifices made by the fallen heroes and heroines.
The directive encompasses the closure of all schools, government offices, private businesses, banks, transport unions, market associations, and other establishments on May 30th. However, exemptions are made for essential services such as medical personnel and emergency responders.
Furthermore, IPOB has urged Christians and adherents of traditional worship to utilise the day for prayers dedicated to the fallen heroes and the pursuit of Biafra’s independence from Nigeria.
Residents have been cautioned to remain indoors from 6 am to 6 pm to prevent potential clashes with security forces. IPOB has encouraged its members residing outside the country to organise peaceful rallies and seminars aimed at raising awareness about the Biafran cause and the ongoing challenges faced by the Biafran people.
Through this commemoration, IPOB seeks to preserve the legacy of the Biafran struggle and maintain momentum towards the attainment of Biafra’s freedom and independence.
