Israel Launches Major Airstrikes On Iran, Escalating Middle East Tensions

Israel Launches Major Airstrikes On Iran, Escalating Middle East Tensions.

Israel has conducted a series of devastating airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities, military bases, and leadership targets, significantly escalating tensions in the Middle East. The operation, codenamed “Rising Lion,” targeted Iran’s Natanz uranium enrichment facility and other strategic sites, resulting in the deaths of senior military figures, including Hossein Salami, head of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, and several nuclear scientists.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described the strikes as a necessary preemptive measure to halt Iran’s nuclear ambitions, claiming Tehran possessed enough enriched uranium to produce “nine nuclear bombs.” The Israeli military confirmed that the operation was launched in response to intelligence indicating an imminent threat from Iran’s nuclear programme.

Iran swiftly retaliated, launching approximately 100 drones towards Israel, which the Israeli Defence Forces are working to intercept. Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei condemned the attack, vowing “severe punishment” for Israel. The strikes have disrupted regional air travel, with airlines rerouting flights to avoid airspace over Israel, Iran, and Iraq.

Global markets reacted sharply to the news, with oil prices surging nearly 12% amid fears of disruptions to Middle Eastern oil supplies. The United Nations Security Council has called an emergency meeting to address the crisis, while world leaders urged restraint to prevent a wider conflict.

Analysts warn that the situation remains volatile, with the potential for further escalation. “This is a critical juncture for the region,” said Dr. Sarah Levy, a Middle East expert at the University of Oxford. “Both sides are entrenched, and the international community must act swiftly to de-escalate tensions.”

As the world watches closely, the Israel-Iran conflict threatens to reshape the geopolitical landscape, with far-reaching implications for global security and stability.
