Bishop Matthew Kukah of the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto urged Nigerian youths on Saturday to consider migrating abroad if they wish to but highlighted that they would eventually recognize Nigeria’s need for them.
Speaking at the convocation ceremony of Veritas University, Bishop Kukah encouraged young people to explore opportunities abroad while emphasizing the importance of creating a conducive environment within the country for healthy competition.
Bishop Kukah acknowledged the vastness of Nigeria and expressed confidence that those who choose to migrate would realize the country’s need for their skills and contributions.
He assured them that settling abroad could be a valuable experience but reminded them that Nigeria had the potential to compete favorably on the global stage.
He stated, “I encourage young people who want to leave Nigeria to please, feel free to leave. The country is big enough. We can assure you that by the time you settle down in the United States of America or wherever you have gone, you will discover that Nigeria needs you.”
However, Bishop Kukah also emphasized the importance of creating the right environment within Nigeria to ensure that those who remain can compete effectively with their counterparts abroad. He expressed optimism about Nigeria’s ability to harness its resources and capabilities, encouraging a collective effort to bring about positive change.
The advice from Bishop Kukah comes at a time when discussions about Nigerians migrating abroad have gained prominence. Recently, Daniel Bwala, a media aide to the 2023 Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, urged the Federal Government led by President Bola Tinubu to address the issue of Nigerians seeking opportunities outside the country.
