President Tinubu Postpones Ogun Trip, Heads To Jos To Commiserate With Plateau

Tinubu Alters Schedule, Prioritises Plateau Visit Amid Security Concerns While Continuing Multi-State Engagements Across Nigeria

Jos to host President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has he rescheduled and reprioritised his travel plans for this week, postponing a previously scheduled trip to Iperu, Ogun State, where he was to flag off operations at the Gateway International Cargo Airport, in order to immediately attend to a security and humanitarian situation in Plateau State.

Reason for Change — Plateau Condolence Visit

The change in plan was prompted by recent deadly gun attacks in parts of Plateau State, particularly in communities around Jos, the state capital, that resulted in the deaths and injuries of several civilians. Responding to these attacks and in a show of solidarity, the Presidency announced that the President will now travel to Jos first to commiserate with the state government, affected families, and local communities.

President Tinubu’s decision reflects the federal government’s prioritisation of national security concerns and its support for citizens affected by violence.

Revised Itinerary — Four‑State Visit (April 2–10, 2026)

Plateau State (Jos) — Thursday, April 2
  • President Tinubu will visit Jos, Plateau State capital to commiserate with the government and people over the recent security incidents.
  • The visit underscores the administration’s concern over civilian loss of life and its commitment to addressing security challenges.
  • From Jos, he is expected to proceed to Lagos to continue engagements around the Easter period.
Lagos State — Good Friday (Friday, April 3)
  • The President will travel to Lagos, Nigeria’s largest city and economic hub, to observe Good Friday.
  • While in Lagos, Tinubu will also engage in various Easter season activities.
  • During this period, he is expected to commission multiple infrastructure projects completed by the Lagos State Government, including:
    • Ojota/Opebi Link Bridge
    • Lagos State Geographic Information System Building (LAGIS)
    • A Multi‑Agency Complex named after the President
    • A new school complex
These additions aim to strengthen urban infrastructure, public services, and state development.
Ogun State — Saturday, April 4
  • On Saturday, the President will travel to Ogun State for the official commissioning of the Gateway International Cargo Airport in Iperu.
  • At the airport ceremony, he is also expected to inaugurate two new commercial aircraft dedicated to cargo operations, which are designed to boost both export and import activities and strengthen the region’s logistics and trade capacity.
  • Additionally, President Tinubu will commission the new edifice of the Federal Operations Unit of the Nigeria Customs Service, as well as its fleet of operational vehicles, enhancing border security and trade facilitation.
Bayelsa State — Friday, April 10
  • Before concluding the multi‑state visit and returning to Abuja, President Tinubu will visit Bayelsa State to commission projects completed by Governor Duoye Diri’s administration.
  • These engagements reflect continued federal and state cooperation on infrastructure and development across Nigeria’s geopolitical zones.

Summary & Broader Significance

  • The initial postponement of the Ogun trip reflects the Presidency’s responsiveness to urgent national developments — specifically, the security situation in Plateau State and its impact on civilian populations.
  • The revised schedule now forms a four‑state visit that blends security, regional solidarity, development, and Easter holidays across Plateau, Lagos, Ogun, and Bayelsa States.
  • This itinerary combines humanitarian engagement, infrastructure commissioning, and economic priorities, in line with broader national policy aims.
  • Mr. President’s movement from Plateau to Lagos, then Ogun and Bayelsa, illustrates a balancing of political, social, and economic leadership roles during a critical period of national celebration and mourning.
