Claudio Ranieri Appointed As Roma Head Coach Until Season’s End.
Veteran manager Claudio Ranieri has come out of retirement to take charge of Roma until the end of the season, just six months after stepping away from management. The 73-year-old will also serve in an advisory capacity, helping Roma’s ownership in their search for a permanent manager. Following this temporary role, Ranieri is set to transition into a senior executive position at the club.
Ranieri’s appointment follows the dismissal of Ivan Juric, who was sacked after only 12 matches in charge. Juric’s tenure began in early October, succeeding Daniele de Rossi, who had managed the club for eight months after José Mourinho’s departure. Ranieri is no stranger to Roma, having managed his hometown club twice previously, including a short spell in 2019. He retired from coaching in May after successfully steering Cagliari to safety in Serie A.
A seasoned manager, Ranieri has held positions at 18 different clubs, including stints with top European teams and the Greek national team. He is perhaps best remembered for leading Leicester City to a historic Premier League title in the 2015-16 season, defying odds and earning widespread admiration.
Roma’s performance this season has been underwhelming, despite an investment of over £80 million during the summer transfer window. Currently, they sit 12th in Serie A with 13 points from 12 games and are at the bottom of the Europa League table with five points from four matches.
Ranieri’s first major test will be on 24 November when Roma face Napoli, a challenging fixture that could set the tone for his interim leadership.
All eyes will be on Ranieri once the season resumes after the international break.
