JUST IN: Jonathan Under Pressure to Drop 2027 Presidential Ambition – PDP

Former President Goodluck Jonathan is reportedly facing mounting pressure from political stakeholders and influential figures in the Niger Delta to abandon any plans for a 2027 presidential bid.

Sources indicate that key actors within the region are urging him to support President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid, emphasizing unity and strategic alignment ahead of the next general elections.

The pressure is reportedly spearheaded by former militant leader Chief Government Ekpemupolo, popularly known as Tompolo. Tompolo, who leads the PBAT Door-2-Door Movement, a grassroots campaign group advocating for Tinubu’s second term, reportedly visited Jonathan at his country home in Otuoke, Ogbia Local Government Area of Bayelsa State on October 16. During the visit, he is said to have strongly advised Jonathan to shelve any presidential ambitions for 2027.

According to sources, Tompolo told Jonathan that “the prevailing sentiment in the Niger Delta is not favorable to any attempt by Jonathan to return to power. The region is largely aligned with the vision of President Tinubu and his ongoing agenda for national development.” Jonathan is said to have listened attentively and promised to reflect on the counsel before making any public declaration regarding his political plans.

The PDP has remained officially silent on Jonathan’s political future. However, insiders reveal that the party’s leadership is closely monitoring the situation, concerned about potential fractures and internal dissent that could arise if the former president pursues a presidential ambition that conflicts with regional and party interests. Analysts say that Jonathan’s position could significantly influence PDP strategies and alliances ahead of 2027.

Political commentators suggest that the Niger Delta’s support is crucial in shaping Nigeria’s electoral outcomes. With prominent figures like Jonathan and Tompolo actively engaged in behind-the-scenes discussions, the region’s collective stance is expected to impact the broader political narrative. Observers note that maintaining regional cohesion and ensuring alignment with national leadership is a priority for political actors in the coming months.

As the 2027 election approaches, the interplay between veteran politicians and emerging leaders within the PDP will be closely watched. Jonathan’s decision, whether to pursue another presidential ambition or support Tinubu, is anticipated to set the tone for party unity and influence voter sentiment, particularly in strategic regions such as the Niger Delta. Political analysts continue to stress that strategic negotiations at this level are essential for maintaining stability and advancing collective political goals.
