Kane Shines As Bayern Dominate Leverkusen In Champions League Clash

Kane Shines As Bayern Dominate Leverkusen In Champions League Clash.

Bayern Munich took a significant step towards the Champions League quarter-finals with a commanding 3-0 victory over Bayer Leverkusen in the first leg of their last-16 tie, thanks to a brace from Harry Kane.

Kane opened the scoring just nine minutes into the all-German encounter, nodding home a well-delivered cross from Michael Olise. Jamal Musiala doubled Bayern’s lead early in the second half, capitalising on an error from Leverkusen goalkeeper Matej Kovar. The visitors’ troubles deepened when Nordi Mukiele received a second yellow card, reducing them to 10 men. Kane then sealed the win from the penalty spot, netting his 31st goal of the season.

Leverkusen, who had remained unbeaten against Bayern in their previous meetings this season, struggled to respond. Their best chance came when Jeremie Frimpong intercepted a poor backpass from Dayot Upamecano, but Bayern captain Manuel Neuer made a crucial save to deny an equaliser.

Musiala came close to adding another when he headed Joshua Kimmich’s corner against the crossbar. However, he did not have to wait long, as Kimmich’s cross slipped through Kovar’s gloves, allowing the young midfielder to score into an open net.

Mukiele’s dismissal for a reckless challenge on Kingsley Coman left Leverkusen with an even steeper challenge. Substitute Edmond Tapsoba then conceded a penalty after a VAR review confirmed he had dragged Kane to the ground. The England captain converted confidently from 12 yards to extend Bayern’s lead.

Kane’s Record-Breaking Form

Kane’s performance further cemented his reputation as one of Europe’s deadliest strikers. His nine goals in this Champions League campaign equal the record for an English player in a single European Cup season, matching Dennis Viollet’s tally for Manchester United in 1956-57.

He now has nine goals in the Champions League knockout stages, trailing only Frank Lampard (15) and Wayne Rooney (14) among English players. Additionally, since joining Bayern, he has scored more goals across all competitions (75) than any other player in Europe’s top five leagues.

Reflecting on the result, Kane stressed the importance of maintaining focus.

“This is the Champions League, this is the biggest game of all,” he told TNT Sports. “We’re playing against a team who have had an unbelievable couple of seasons. If we don’t carry it on, then it doesn’t mean anything. We’re here to send a message not just to everyone but to ourselves.”

Leverkusen’s Costly Errors

Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso will rue his team’s mistakes. Opting to start without a recognised striker, he left key forwards Patrik Schick and Victor Boniface on the bench, limiting his side’s attacking threat.

Mukiele’s passive defending allowed Kane to head in the opener, while Kovar’s blunder gifted Bayern their second goal. Mukiele’s red card and Tapsoba’s foul for the penalty compounded Leverkusen’s woes, leaving them with a mountain to climb in the second leg.

Alonso admitted his side contributed to their downfall.

“A lot went against us today, but that was our own fault. We didn’t have good control and made big mistakes,” he said.

Leverkusen were fortunate not to concede more, as Bayern substitute Joao Palhinha struck the woodwork in stoppage time. The only concern for Vincent Kompany’s side was an injury to Neuer, who was substituted late in the match.

With the second leg set for Tuesday, 11 March at the BayArena, Bayern will look to finish the job and secure their place in the quarter-finals.
