La Liga is optimistic about receiving approval to host Barcelona’s match against Atletico Madrid in Miami this December, a move that could mark a significant moment in football history. World football’s governing body, FIFA, is set to make the final decision on whether this ground-breaking match will take place overseas.
Currently, the game is scheduled for 22 December, just before La Liga’s winter break. However, both clubs are also set to participate in the Spanish Super Cup, a four-team tournament taking place in Saudi Arabia at the start of January.
This potential move follows FIFA’s decision in April to withdraw from a legal battle involving Relevant, a prominent match promoter. The legal challenge had previously prevented official league matches from being hosted in the United States. By May, FIFA had announced the formation of a working group to evaluate the impact of hosting competitive football matches abroad.
At present, Barcelona are playing their home games at the Olympic Stadium in Montjuic, as the Nou Camp undergoes significant renovation. La Liga president Javier Tebas has been vocal about his ambition to take league matches beyond Spain’s borders. While the plan is still in its early stages, league insiders remain hopeful that the Miami fixture will get the green light.
In contrast, the Premier League has confirmed that it has no current plans to stage matches overseas.
