La Liga: Madrid Derby Marred By Fan Disruption As Atletico And Real Share The Spoils

Madrid Derby Marred By Fan Disruption As Atletico And Real Share The Spoils.

Sunday’s highly anticipated Madrid derby between Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid was temporarily halted for about 15 minutes due to disruptive behaviour from sections of the Atletico fanbase. The interruption occurred when various objects, including lighters and a plastic bag filled with unknown contents, were thrown onto the pitch.

Referee Carlos del Cerro Grande decided to take the players off the field while the situation was addressed. Atletico Madrid’s players, along with manager Diego Simeone, approached their supporters, urging them to cease the disturbances. Once order was restored, the match resumed without further incident.

The contest ended in a 1-1 draw, with Angel Correa netting an injury-time equaliser for Atletico. Initially, Correa’s goal was ruled out for offside, but a review by the video assistant referee (VAR) overturned the decision, much to the delight of the home crowd. Earlier in the game, Real Madrid defender Eder Militao opened the scoring, helping extend Real’s unbeaten streak to 36 matches in all competitions.

Meanwhile, Barcelona’s perfect start to the La Liga season came to a halt on Saturday, suffering a surprising 4-2 defeat at the hands of Osasuna. Barcelona boss Hansi Flick, experiencing his first defeat in charge, took full responsibility for the result, stating: “It’s my responsibility,” in his post-match interview with Movistar Plus. He explained his decision to rest several key players, saying, “I tried to protect the players because they have been playing a lot of minutes, but I didn’t expect us to play like this.”

Despite the loss, Barcelona remain at the top of the La Liga table, with Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid, both unbeaten, trailing behind them.
