Lagos Impounds 40 Vehicles In Crackdown On Illegal Garages

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has seized 40 vehicles in a targeted operation against illegal garages and road obstructions in key areas of Lagos.

The operation, conducted on Friday, June 21, resulted in the impoundment of 25 commercial and 15 private vehicles in Oyingbo, Ijora, and Idumota.

LASTMA officials, led by Kayode Odunuga and under the guidance of Sola Giwa, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, carried out the enforcement action. The operation aimed to address persistent traffic congestion issues caused by unauthorised parking and makeshift garages in these areas.

Sola Giwa emphasised the importance of the crackdown, stating, “Illegal garages have been a significant challenge in our quest to maintain a seamless traffic flow in Lagos. These impoundments send a strong message to all offenders that the state will not tolerate activities that disrupt public order and endanger the lives of our citizens.”

The initiative is part of a broader plan to enhance Lagos’ transportation network and maintain order on the roads. Giwa highlighted that the operation will be sustained and extended to other parts of the city where similar issues are prevalent.

Local residents and business owners have reportedly expressed support for the government’s actions, recognizing the positive impact on their daily activities. LASTMA has urged all vehicle owners and operators to adhere to state traffic rules to avoid penalties.

Giwa also encouraged drivers to report any broken down or abandoned trailers to LASTMA promptly, reinforcing the government’s commitment to creating a more pleasant and livable Lagos for all residents.

As this operation continues, LASTMA officials remain vigilant in their efforts to improve traffic conditions and ensure compliance with transportation regulations across the city.
