The Lagos Rail Mass Transit (LRMT) Red Line inauguration ceremony witnessed the signing of a contract between the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) and the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) for the construction of Phase Two of the Red Line.
The Red Line, stretching across 37 kilometers, has been hailed as a vital addition to Lagos’ transport network, connecting Agbado in Ogun State to Oyingbo in Lagos Central. The first phase, commissioned with seven stations, promises to ease commuting for urban residents, catering to an estimated 250,000 passengers daily.
The inauguration ceremony, graced by dignitaries including President Tinubu, highlighted the collaborative efforts between federal and state authorities in realizing the project. Notably, the event also saw the presence of six governors, members of the Federal Executive Council, Lagos cabinet members, and other prominent figures from various sectors.
President Tinubu commended Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for his leadership in advancing the transport agenda, emphasizing the importance of such infrastructural projects in fostering economic growth and improving citizens’ welfare. Tinubu underscored the significance of the Red Line inauguration, citing it as a testament to Lagos’ commitment to progressive governance.
Governor Sanwo-Olu, in his address, lauded the completion of the Red Line’s first phase as a culmination of extensive efforts to reform Lagos’ transportation sector. He outlined the Strategic Transport Master Plan (STMP), which includes six integrated rail lines among other initiatives aimed at enhancing mobility within the city.
