The Lagos Command of the Nigerian Correctional Service Saturday officially confirmed that the Lagos State Government has granted pardon to a total of 30 inmates, subsequently facilitating their release from custody. News Agency of Nigeria reports
In an interview with the Newsmen, Mr. Rotomi Oladokun, the spokesperson of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) Lagos Command, officially confirmed the release of the 30 inmates by the Lagos State Government.
Oladokun said the 30 inmates were granted pardon by the Chief Judge of Lagos State, Justice Kazeem Alogba. Consequently, they were released from custody as a result of the Chief Judge’s decision.
“The inmates released are those who committed minor offences such as assault, disorderliness, low-level shoplifting, road traffic offences, theft, and burglary, among others.
“There is, however, a need to free more inmates as the state custodial facilities are housing over 8000 inmates, which is above their capacities,” Oladokun said.
Oladokun called on the state government to use its justice system to check the database of inmates to see if more inmates could be released. He also urged Nigerians to accept the freed inmates and help them reintegrate back into society.
