Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas Limited (NLNG), one of Africa’s leading energy companies, has announced the appointment of Leye Falade as its new Chief Executive Officer (CEO), a move expected to shape the company’s strategic direction in the coming years.

A Leadership Transition at a Strategic Time

Falade is set to assume the role of NLNG CEO on April 26, 2026, taking over from Philip Mshelbila, who has led the company for more than four years. Mshelbila will be leaving to take up a new international position as Secretary‑General of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) in Doha, Qatar.

The leadership change was confirmed by NLNG’s Board of Directors and follows a send‑off ceremony in Abuja celebrating Mshelbila’s tenure and contributions to the company’s growth and resilience in the face of global energy challenges.

Who Is Leye Falade?

Falade is an accomplished energy executive with extensive international experience. At the time of his appointment, he serves as the Managing Director of Brunei LNG Sendirian Berhad, a key player in the global liquefied natural gas industry.

His career spans upstream and midstream gas operations across seven countries, including Europe, Asia, the Middle East, Russia, and Africa, highlighting a deep understanding of global energy markets and operational excellence.

Falade holds an engineering degree as well as an MBA from Henley Business School, United Kingdom, and is recognised for his strengths in gas and petroleum operations, product optimisation, business improvement, and change management.

Strategic Implications for NLNG

NLNG plays a pivotal role in Nigeria’s energy sector and its contribution to the country’s export revenue. As CEO, Falade inherits leadership at a time when the company is navigating a dynamic global energy landscape, characterised by fluctuating demand, energy transition pressures, and opportunities for market expansion.

Under Mshelbila’s leadership, NLNG pursued strategic initiatives to diversify feed‑gas supplies and embed sustainability into its operations — a foundation that Falade is expected to build on as he takes the helm.

Falade’s international exposure and operational expertise position him well to steer NLNG towards further growth, strengthen its global competitiveness, and deepen its contribution to Nigeria’s economic development.

A Broader Energy Leadership Narrative

The appointment of Leye Falade also reflects a broader trend of Nigerian professionals rising to prominence in the global energy sector. His profile resonates with recent features highlighting the influence of the Falade brothers in Nigeria’s energy landscape, underscoring the growing footprint of Nigerian talent in major energy institutions.
