Maresca Maintains Trust In Sanchez Despite Costly Error

Maresca Maintains Trust In Sanchez Despite Costly Error.

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has reaffirmed his trust in goalkeeper Robert Sanchez despite the Spaniard’s high-profile error during the recent match against Manchester City. Sanchez, who was lobbed by Erling Haaland following a misjudged advance off his line, has now committed five errors leading directly to goals in the Premier League this season—more than any other player and the highest tally by a Chelsea player in a single campaign since 2007-08.

The incident unfolded when Haaland capitalised on a long punt from City’s goalkeeper, Ederson, outmuscling Trevoh Chalobah in the process. Sanchez initially moved forward but, realising his miscalculation, retreated too late, allowing Haaland to curl the ball into the net.

Commenting on the error, pundit Jamie Redknapp criticised Sanchez’s decision-making. “I’m saying ‘just stay where you are’,” Redknapp said. “He’s not going to make up that distance, so why even make up [Haaland’s] mind?”

The timing of Sanchez’s blunder coincided with a clean sheet kept by Chelsea’s on-loan goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga, who featured in Bournemouth’s emphatic 5-0 victory over Nottingham Forest. This has further heightened scrutiny on Sanchez’s performances since joining Chelsea.

Despite the setback, Maresca was supportive of his goalkeeper. “Robert is the first to admit his mistake, and that is positive,” said the Chelsea boss. He added, “I still trust him.” However, Maresca also hinted at potential changes ahead of Chelsea’s next Premier League match against West Ham on 3 February. “We have an entire week. We will see the reaction and decide for the next game.”

The manager’s remarks suggest that Filip Jorgensen, who has already started two league matches this season, may have an opportunity to step up if Sanchez fails to convince in training. At 22 years old, Jorgensen is viewed as a promising alternative and could be in line for a longer stint should Maresca opt for a change.

Chelsea will now look to regroup and refocus as they prepare for their crucial deadline-day clash with West Ham.
