The revelation, made on Friday, underscores a broader and more serious compromise of its core software systems than initially acknowledged.
According to reports from CNN, Microsoft stated that hackers, believed to be supported by the Russian government, utilized stolen data from the company’s corporate email systems to infiltrate “some of the company’s source code repositories and internal systems.”
Source code, the fundamental architecture of software, is highly sought-after by both corporations and espionage entities due to its critical role in software functionality and potential for subsequent attacks on other systems.
This breach, initially disclosed in January, follows a pattern of cyberattacks attributed to the same group responsible for the infamous SolarWinds breach in 2020, which targeted several US government agencies.
