The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has uncovered a disturbing scheme orchestrated by suspected human traffickers.
These individuals are preying on vulnerable Nigerians by promising fake job opportunities in neighboring West African countries such as Ghana, Ivory Coast, and Liberia.
According to NAPTIP, the traffickers use deceptive tactics, including exploiting global brand trademarks and offering unrealistic job offers in the oil and gas industry, particularly in gold mining and oil companies.
Victims are lured with promises of hefty monthly salaries of up to $900, which are later proven to be false.
Director-General of NAPTIP, Prof Fatima Waziri-Azi, revealed these findings at the agency’s headquarters in Abuja, emphasizing the increased efforts to combat human trafficking. Waziri-Azi warned Nigerians, especially youths aged between 15 and 35, to exercise caution and seek advice before accepting any tempting offers.
The traffickers often instruct victims to bring substantial amounts of money, up to N850,000, for documentation and logistical expenses. Upon arrival at their supposed destinations, the traffickers confiscate the victims’ money, phones, and other personal belongings, leaving them vulnerable and exploited.
NAPTIP urges citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious offers or activities to the appropriate authorities.
The agency reaffirms its commitment to combating human trafficking and protecting the rights and dignity of all Nigerians.
