NEMA Urges Flood-Prone Communities To Begin Relocation Amidst Predictions, Seek State Governors Backing

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has issued a stern advisory to residents of flood-prone areas, urging them to commence relocation as a precautionary measure.

In light of forecasts from the Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and Nigerian Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA), which predict severe flooding in 33 states this year, NEMA underscores the urgency of proactive action.

According to the agencies’ projections, 25 states and 72 local government areas are currently at heightened risk of flooding, with vulnerability expected to persist from July through September. Subsequently, between October and November, 19 states and 44 council areas are likely to be affected.

In response to the looming threat, NEMA’s Director-General, Mrs. Zubaida Umar, has emphasised the importance of community awareness and mobilisation efforts. Speaking at the National Emergency Coordination Forum, she stressed the need for early desilting and debris clearance in water bodies to prevent blockages, along with vigilance in monitoring dam discharge and the creation of detention dams.

Mrs. Umar reassured us that NEMA remains committed to implementing proactive measures to mitigate the impact of anticipated flooding. In the event of a disaster, the agency pledges to collaborate with government partners to provide essential assistance to affected individuals.

Furthermore, Mrs. Umar called upon all stakeholders to fulfil their roles in preventing potential loss of life and property due to climate-related disasters in 2024. She highlighted the importance of coordination among various emergency sectors, including food security, water sanitation, health, education, and logistics, to effectively respond to crises.

As the nation braces for the impending flood season, NEMA’s proactive stance underscores the critical need for preemptive measures to safeguard vulnerable communities and mitigate potential devastation.
