Netherlands Reach Euro 2024 Quarter-Finals After 16 Years

Netherlands Reach Euro 2024 Quarter-Finals After 16 Years.

Substitute Donyell Malen scored twice and Cody Gakpo added his third goal of Euro 2024, helping the Netherlands overcome a spirited Romania to reach the tournament’s quarter-finals for the first time in 16 years.

Liverpool forward Gakpo opened the scoring midway through the first half with a brilliant finish, cutting inside before driving the ball into the bottom corner. Despite missing numerous chances, the Netherlands avoided any potential setbacks when substitute Malen stabbed in a late goal from Gakpo’s pass.

Malen then secured the victory with a second goal, charging forward as Romania committed players upfield and slotting home decisively.

The Netherlands showed significant improvement, dealing with early pressure from an enthusiastic Romanian side backed by their loud and colourful fans. Romania’s pressing caused early mistakes, giving the Netherlands a scare when Dennis Man’s shot just missed.

Gakpo’s goal shifted the game’s momentum, and the Netherlands could have extended their lead before halftime, but Xavi Simons missed a clear opportunity. In the second half, Romania continued to fight, but the Netherlands created better chances. Memphis Depay missed from close range, Virgil van Dijk hit the post with a header, and Gakpo’s driving shot was pushed behind.

Malen’s two late goals ensured there was no late drama, allowing the Netherlands to look forward to facing either Turkey or a rematch with group opponents Austria in the last eight.

Dutch Bounce Back After Austria Defeat

The Netherlands started the tournament well, securing their place in the last 16 with four points from two games. However, their performance in the 3-2 defeat by Austria raised concerns due to mistakes and a lack of cohesion.

Against Romania, after an initially shaky start, the Dutch regained their attacking rhythm post-Gakpo’s goal, playing with pace and precision. Although they missed several chances, the return to a high-tempo style encouraged their fans.

                Romania’s Brave Run Ends

This was Romania’s first appearance in the knockout stages of a European Championship in 24 years. Their fans created a vibrant atmosphere at Allianz Arena, inspiring a strong start from their team. Despite pressing high early on, Romania found it hard to sustain the pressure after the Netherlands scored.

Though unable to mount a comeback, Romania’s fans showed their appreciation, staying behind long after the final whistle to applaud their team’s efforts.
