The Chairman/CEO of Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has emphasized the importance of traveling abroad through legitimate means and with proper documentation to avoid potential consequences.
This advice comes as Dabiri-Erewa visited Nigerians in a shelter in Brampton, Canada, where she expressed sympathy for their situation.
According to a statement by NiDCOM spokesman Abdur-Rahman Balogun on Thursday, Dabiri-Erewa highlighted the growing challenges faced by those without proper documentation in many countries. She was quoted as saying, “It is just not worth it, more often than not.”
During her visit, the NiDCOM boss engaged with Nigerians in the shelter, offering words of caution and encouragement. The statement also mentioned Vivian Eruka, who works with those in shelters, sharing that the Mayor of Brampton had pledged to provide an additional 800 beds and shelters for asylum seekers.
The humanitarian efforts extended to the shelter inmates included a donation of hundreds of loaves of bread by Mr. Wale Rabiu, the owner of Matlock bakery.
The NiDCOM spokesman, in a phone conversation with newsmen, clarified that Dabiri-Erewa visited only one of the asylum shelters in Canada, emphasizing the existence of multiple shelters scattered across the country.
