Nigeria Eyes China’s C919 Jet For Local Operations

The Federal Government is considering certifying China’s C919 jet for local airlines. The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) is leading the certification process, which could take several months to complete.

According to Capt. Chris Ona Najomo, Director-General of NCAA, “We’re looking at the certification of the airplane. First of all, that is where we have to start.”

The C919, a narrow-body jet produced by Chinese planemaker COMAC, lacks benchmark certifications from Western regulators. Despite this, COMAC has offered maintenance and training support for Nigerian carriers and is exploring dry lease arrangements. Abdullahi Ahmed, CEO of Nigerian airline NG Eagle, expressed interest in expanding his fleet and would consider COMAC planes if certified and accompanied by maintenance and training support.

Nigeria presents a growing aviation market with a population of 230 million people. The certification of the C919 could boost confidence among lessors, enabling the country’s 13 airlines to access newer planes on the leasing market. This move could lead to increased competition in the Nigerian aviation market, potentially driving down costs and improving services.

The average real airfare in Nigeria fell 43.6% between 2011 and 2023, according to data from IATA. With the C919’s certification, Nigerian airlines could benefit from more affordable and efficient aircraft. COMAC’s offer of maintenance and training support could also help Nigerian carriers improve their operational efficiency.

The certification process will involve a thorough evaluation of the C919’s safety features and performance. The NCAA will work closely with COMAC to ensure that the aircraft meets international safety standards. According to Capt. Najomo, the certification process is a complex one that requires careful consideration.

If certified, the C919 could become a popular choice for Nigerian airlines. The aircraft’s efficiency and affordability could make it an attractive option for carriers looking to expand their fleets. Nigerian airlines could benefit from the C919’s advanced technology and improved fuel efficiency.

The potential certification of the C919 in Nigeria could have significant implications for the country’s aviation industry. It could lead to increased competition, improved services, and lower costs for passengers. The NCAA’s decision will be closely watched by industry stakeholders and could set a precedent for other African countries.
