Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has sharply criticized President Bola Tinubu’s recent comments that appeared to downplay Nigeria’s struggles by comparing them to those of other countries.
During a meeting with a delegation from the National Assembly who visited to celebrate Eid-el-Kabir, President Tinubu remarked, “Yes, there is poverty; there is suffering in the land. We are not the only people facing such, but we must face our challenges.”
Obi responded to Tinubu’s statement on X.com on Friday, urging Nigerian leaders to move beyond merely acknowledging the country’s myriad challenges and instead provide concrete solutions. He highlighted Nigeria’s severe issues with poverty, insecurity, hunger, poor education, high infant mortality, corruption, unemployment, and a significant income gap between the rich and the poor.
“The problems facing Nigeria are well-known to all Nigerians,” Obi stated. “We are the poverty capital of the world, among the most insecure people on earth, among the hungriest, have poor education quality and the highest number of out-of-school children, high infant mortality, corruption, unemployment, the highest income gap between the poor and the rich, high corruption perception index, infrastructure and healthcare challenges, and more.”
Obi expressed his disappointment that instead of outlining a clear plan to address these issues, Nigerian leaders often downplay the situation by drawing comparisons to other countries.
“It is disheartening to hear those in charge, who were hired to address our problems, make statements like ‘we are not the only ones struggling with poverty and hunger,’” he said.
Obi emphasized the need for a comprehensive approach to tackle Nigeria’s unique challenges, criticizing generalizations that dismiss the real experiences of Nigerians. He called for a leadership that provides direction, guidance, and solutions in times of crisis, likening it to a pilot who reassures passengers during turbulence.
“Instead of merely acknowledging that other countries face similar challenges, we need to hear a thorough plan of action to tackle our unique struggles,” Obi urged. “We require concrete solutions and a clear vision to address these issues, not comparisons that downplay our circumstances. I urge those in leadership positions to offer tangible solutions, not mere reminders that others face similar challenges.”
He called for a clear vision and a roadmap to overcome obstacles, stressing that this is the hallmark of visionary leadership and a trait of nations making progress. “We need a comprehensive approach to tackle our specific challenges, not generalizations that dismiss our experiences. A true leader provides direction, guidance, solutions, and reassurance in times of crisis.”
Obi concluded by asserting that only with tangible solutions and visionary leadership can Nigerians begin to trust that the country is in capable hands, working towards a brighter future for all.
