In a significant move to address the challenges facing Nigeria’s aviation sector, particularly the shortage of aircraft, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with global aviation giant Boeing.

This development was announced on Thursday by Tunde Moshood, Special Adviser on Media and Communications to the Minister.

The MoU, signed by Keyamo and Anbessie Yitbarek, Boeing’s Vice President of Commercial Sales and Marketing for Africa, aims to modernise Nigeria’s aviation industry by facilitating the acquisition of newer Boeing aircraft for Nigerian airlines.

The agreement includes comprehensive training programmes in airline operations and business models to improve the operational efficiency of these airlines.

Key stakeholders in the Nigerian aviation sector, including executives from Nigerian airlines, top officials from the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), and representatives from the Airline Operators of Nigeria, were present at the signing ceremony.

The MoU’s key provisions include leveraging Boeing’s extensive network of financiers and lessors to help Nigerian airlines modernise their fleets. Boeing will also offer enhanced technical support to assist airlines in integrating new or used Boeing aircraft into their operations seamlessly.

Additionally, Nigerian airlines will gain access to Boeing’s vast repository of maintenance documents, engineering drawings, parts purchasing, and flight operations documents, helping to streamline maintenance practices and reduce operational downtimes.

Furthermore, Boeing will provide on-site Field Services Representation in Nigeria or nearby locations, offering immediate support to airlines in managing operational challenges. The agreement also includes a leadership development training programme aimed at strengthening the leadership pipeline within Nigerian airlines, ensuring sustained growth and excellence.

In collaboration with the NCAA, the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB), the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), and regional regulators, Boeing will work to bolster safety oversight within Nigeria’s aviation sector.

Commenting on the partnership, Minister Keyamo emphasised its importance in supporting the growth of Nigeria’s aviation industry.

“This partnership with Boeing represents a significant milestone in our efforts to modernise and enhance the capabilities of Nigerian airlines. The benefits of this MoU will be far-reaching, not only in improving the operational efficiency of our airlines but also in ensuring the safety and reliability of air travel in Nigeria,” he said.

Boeing’s Vice President, Anbessie Yitbarek, expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration, stating, “We are excited to work closely with Nigeria’s aviation stakeholders to deliver tailored solutions that will help Nigerian airlines thrive in the competitive global aviation landscape.
