Nigeria Unveils Plans For 2025 Olympic Day Celebration.

The Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC), in partnership with the Nigeria Sport For All Commission, has announced an exciting lineup for the 2025 Olympic Day celebration, set to take place on Saturday, 28 June, across various states nationwide. This annual global event, which commemorates the founding of the modern Olympic Movement by Pierre de Coubertin in 1894, promises to be a vibrant celebration of sport, health, and unity.

In a statement released on Thursday, the NOC outlined its plans to engage Nigerians of all ages and fitness levels in a range of activities designed to promote physical well-being and the Olympic values of excellence, friendship, and respect. From jogging and walking to aerobic routines and recreational sports demonstrations, the programme aims to encourage healthy living and foster community spirit. The initiative will see participation across multiple states, with Lagos, home to the NOC headquarters, serving as a key hub for the festivities.

Tony Nezianya, Public Relations Officer for the NOC, highlighted the enthusiasm already building nationwide. “We’ve received strong interest from various states, many of which are already planning their local events,” he said. In Lagos, attendees can look forward to a robust schedule featuring mass aerobics, fun runs, and special sports exhibitions, all culminating in the presentation of Olympic Day diplomas, signed by the President of the International Olympic Committee, to recognise participants’ contributions.

Dr. Abdul Ibrahim, Chairman of the NOC Sport For All Commission, urged state governments to mobilise through their sports councils and commissions to ensure widespread participation. “Olympic Day is not just a celebration—it’s a movement,” he declared. “It’s a call to action for every Nigerian to take charge of their health, engage with their communities, and live the Olympic spirit.” He also extended an invitation to corporate bodies and philanthropists to support the event through sponsorships or donations, offering valuable exposure for contributors.

First established in 1948, Olympic Day has grown into an international tradition, uniting people worldwide in a shared commitment to sportsmanship, inclusivity, and wellness. Nigeria’s 2025 edition aims to reflect these ideals, encouraging participants to embrace physical activity and connect with others in a joyous, mass-oriented fitness programme.

As preparations gain momentum, the NOC and its partners are poised to make 28 June a memorable day, blending sport and culture to inspire Nigerians to pursue healthier, more active lifestyles. Further details on local events and participation opportunities will be shared in the coming weeks.
