The Nigerian Army has taken action following reports of soldiers’ involvement in the theft of armored cables at Dangote Refinery located in Lagos.
Major Gen Onyema Nwachukwu, the Director of Army Public Relations, announced on Wednesday that an investigation is underway, with the assurance that if found guilty, the soldiers will face the full force of the law.
The incident, which occurred recently, was thwarted by vigilant troops and private security operatives stationed at the refinery.
The Army has expressed deep concern over the alleged involvement of its personnel in criminal activities, emphasizing that such actions do not align with the values and ethics of the Nigerian Army.
According to preliminary findings, the two suspects were reportedly hired by a civilian contractor known only as Mr. Smart, who claimed to be retrieving armored cables left behind on the refinery’s premises. However, upon approaching the security post, Mr. Smart fled the scene, leaving the soldiers behind.
Efforts are ongoing to uncover the extent of the soldiers’ culpability in the incident, with the stolen cables already recovered and secured by authorities. The Nigerian Army is collaborating closely with the management of the Dangote Refinery to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter.
In a statement, the Nigerian Army reassured the public of its commitment to discipline and integrity within its ranks. The Army emphasized its zero-tolerance policy towards criminal behavior among its personnel and pledged to uphold values of accountability and ethical conduct.
