Nigerian Government Moves To Restore Power After Weeklong Blackout In Northern States.
The Nigerian government has announced efforts to restore electricity to numerous northern states affected by a weeklong blackout due to issues with the national grid. In a statement released through the Nigeria National Grid’s official account on Saturday, authorities indicated that temporary relief is on the way, with plans to supply an additional 400 megawatts of power to the affected areas via the Ugwuaji APIR Line.
This outage has impacted major northern states, including Kaduna, Kano, Jigawa, Benue, Katsina, Taraba, Gombe, Borno, and Nasarawa. The blackout stemmed from a recent collapse of the 330 kV Shiroro-Kaduna transmission lines, which were reportedly vandalised. In response, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s special adviser on public communications, Sunday Dare, shared that the Office of the National Security Adviser is now coordinating surveillance efforts with both the Nigerian Air Force and the Army to monitor and protect these critical infrastructure lines.
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) confirmed that repair teams have already identified faults on the affected transmission lines. The company noted that restoration of Line L2 is nearing completion, and once this work is finalised, they will proceed to repair the second line to fully restore power.
This coordinated response underscores the government’s commitment to addressing the disruption and protecting essential infrastructure to ensure stable electricity supply for residents across the northern states.
