Nigerian Military Airstrikes Kills ISWAP Leader In Borno State

The Nigerian military has successfully eliminated the notorious leader, Ba’a Shuwa, along with numerous fighters during a major offensive in Borno State.

The targeted airstrikes, conducted on Tuesday, January 2, 2023, at Kwatan Dilla in the Abadam local government area, proved to be a significant setback for the ISIS-affiliated ISWAP terrorists.

Ba’a Shuwa, who held the ISWAP leadership over the Nigerian Wylayat, Lake Chad, Kwalfarji, Timbuktu Farouq, and Sambisa Mantika, was appointed in 2021 following the demise of Abubakar Shekau.

Intelligence sources, as disclosed by Zagazola Makama, a Counter Insurgency Expert and Security Analyst in the Lake Chad region, revealed that the airstrikes effectively neutralized Ba’a Shuwa and a substantial number of his fighters.

Exploitation of the aftermath showcased compelling footage of destroyed enemy elements and equipment, validating the success of the offensive.

The sources further detailed Ba’a Shuwa’s command over numerous terrorist camps, including Chiralia, Markas Kauwa, Abirma, Buk, Abulam, Dusula, Abbagajiri, and Gorgore, within the Timbuktu and Alagarno axis in the South of Borno.

Key commanding officers under Ba’a Shuwa, such as Khaid Hanzala, Ba’a Idirisa, Rawana, Abou Ibrahim, Mallam Abubakar, Abou Aisha, and Abou Khalid, were also identified. Abou Khalid, notably responsible for the recent attack on electricity towers along the Maiduguri-Damaturu highway, was among those targeted.

Ba’a Shuwa’s group was primarily responsible for a series of attacks, ambushes, and the deployment of IEDs/mines in various regions of Borno and Yobe States.

The terrorists operated from heavily fortified hideouts, strategically concealed under thick foliage and rocks within the challenging terrain known as the Timbuktu Triangle. The successful operation marks a significant stride in the Nigerian military’s ongoing efforts to dismantle key terrorist leadership and ensure regional security.
