Nigerian Senate Approves N124.29 Billion Budget For Nigeria Police Trust Fund In 2024.

The Nigerian Senate has approved a 2024 budget of N124.29 billion for the Nigeria Police Trust Fund (NPTF). The announcement, made during a plenary session at the National Assembly, marks a crucial step in enhancing the operational capacity of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF).

The budget, designed to address pressing security challenges, allocates funds to critical areas aimed at improving policing across the country. According to details from the Senate, the budget includes N1.21 billion for personnel costs of the NPTF, N8.05 billion for NPTF overhead costs, and N16.59 billion for NPF overhead costs. This financial commitment is expected to strengthen the police force’s ability to tackle crime and maintain public safety, aligning with Nigeria’s broader security objectives.

The revenue for the N124.29 billion budget is sourced from multiple streams, ensuring a robust funding framework. A significant portion, N104.01 billion, will come from 0.5% of the total revenue accrued to the Federation Account. Additionally, 0.5% of total Value Added Tax (VAT) will contribute N18.90 billion, while 0.05% of the net profits of Nigerian companies will add N500 million. The budget is further supplemented by N875.56 million in aids, grants, and donations.

Senators highlighted the urgency of implementing the 2024 budget, noting that the NPTF is still rolling out its 2023 fiscal plan. The swift approval of this budget underscores the Senate’s recognition of Nigeria’s pressing security needs, including combating insurgency, banditry, and other forms of crime that have challenged the nation in recent years.

This development comes amidst broader economic and security discussions in Nigeria. As the country grapples with inflationary pressures and strives to meet its oil production targets, the approval of the NPTF budget signals a commitment to prioritising security as a cornerstone of national development.

As Nigeria continues to navigate complex security challenges, the N124.29 billion budget for the NPTF is a clear indication of the government’s intent to invest in a safer and more secure future for its citizens.
