Nigeria’s Hope For Medal Rest On Ese Brume; As Disappointment Continues

Nigeria Pins Hopes on Ese Brume for Medal in Paris 2024 Olympics After Disappointing Day.

Nigeria’s medal aspirations at the Paris 2024 Olympics now rest on the shoulders of Ese Brume in the women’s long jump event after a series of setbacks on Thursday morning, including a shocking defeat for wrestling medal hopeful Odunayo Adekuoroye.

Adekuoroye, who entered the quarterfinals of the women’s 57kg wrestling event with high expectations, suffered a surprising 10-8 defeat to China’s Kexin Hong. The Nigerian wrestler had taken an early 4-0 lead but was overpowered by her opponent, who scored 8 points in quick succession to turn the match around. This loss ends Adekuoroye’s journey in Paris, dashing hopes for a podium finish after she had initially impressed by defeating Fouzia Aouissi by a Victory by Injury (VIN).

In another disappointing result, Nigeria’s Edose Ibadin failed to advance in the men’s 800m event. Ibadin, the national record holder, finished seventh in his repechage heat with a time of 1:49.09, falling short of the semifinal qualification. Botswana’s Kethobogile Haingura took the automatic qualifying spot with a time of 1:45.52.

With these setbacks, all eyes are now on Ese Brume, who will lead Nigeria’s medal charge in the women’s long jump final, scheduled for 7 pm tonight. Brume, who won bronze in the same event at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, will be joined by fellow Nigerians Ruth Usoro and Prestina Ochonogor in the final.

Thursday has proven to be a challenging day for Nigeria at the Olympics, with the relay teams also crashing out of the 4×100m events in both the men’s and women’s categories earlier in the morning.

The Nigerian Sports Ministry had set its sights on surpassing the country’s performance at the Atlanta 1996 Olympics, where Nigeria secured two gold medals, one silver, and three bronze medals. However, with no medals yet after 12 days of competition, the pressure is now on Brume and her teammates to deliver Nigeria’s first medal of the Games.
