The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), has issued an urgent weather alert warning residents in several parts of the country to prepare for thunderstorms, strong winds, and fluctuating weather conditions over the coming days. The advisory, released by NiMet’s Central Forecast Office in Abuja, highlights a mix of weather elements that could affect daily activities, transportation, and safety across affected regions.

Key Forecast Highlights

According to the latest forecast, Nigerians will experience a combination of:
  • Thunderstorms occurring in the afternoon and evening in several states, especially in southern and central parts of the country.
  • Strong winds accompanying the storm systems, leading to possible disruptions in outdoor activities and posing risks to weak structures.
  • Cloudy skies with intermittent sunshine, especially in northern and central areas where dust haze may also reduce visibility.

NiMet’s warning underscores that strong winds often precede storm development, and people living in vulnerable or flood-prone areas should take extra precaution.

Regions Most Likely to Be Affected

The forecast indicates that southern and central Nigeria are most likely to experience noticeable thunderstorms and gusty winds. States such as Lagos, Ogun, Ondo, Edo, Bayelsa, Rivers, Delta, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, and others may see thunderstorm activity later in the day, often with intermittent rainfall.

For the northern and North‑Central regions, the outlook includes cloudy skies, with dust haze in some areas reducing visibility, especially in the early hours. Thunderstorm activity in these zones is generally less intense but still a notable feature of the forecast.

Public Safety and Preparedness Tips

NiMet has also provided important safety advisories, urging the public to take proactive steps amid the changing weather:
  • Residents are advised to secure loose outdoor items and avoid unnecessary travel during intense storms.
  • Motorists should drive carefully, especially during rainy conditions when visibility and road traction can be compromised.
  • Airline operators and transport services have been reminded to obtain updated weather information to guide operational planning.
  • Individuals with respiratory conditions are advised to take extra care during periods of dust haze or strong winds that may carry particulate matter.

Context: Broader Weather Patterns

The latest NiMet warning forms part of a series of recent forecasts that have seen the agency caution Nigerians about variable weather conditions in 2026, including dust haze, thunderstorms, rainfall, and rising temperatures in different parts of the country. Previous outlooks have also highlighted risks such as reduced visibility and the potential for flash flooding in vulnerable areas.

In summary

With thunderstorms and strong winds forecast across parts of Nigeria, NiMet’s advisory serves as a timely reminder to stay weather-aware and take sensible precautions to protect life and property.
