The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.) has joined forces with the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Energy Resources (DOS-ENR) and Deloitte to achieve net-zero carbon goals.

The project which falls under the Energy and Mineral Governance Program (EMGP) focuses on reducing GHG emissions through methane abatement aligned with global best practices.

The three-day Technical Assistance workshop on Global Methane Abatement and Decarbonisation which commenced on Monday at the PTDF Tower in Abuja, resulted in the initial phase of the collaboration.

Building on the momentum generated by the July 2023 capacity-building training on Methane Baselining and Organizational Design, and the Development of a Methane Technology Evaluation Framework, the recent workshop aimed to define critical success elements for the Methane Abatement Pilot Project Implementation, Scaling, and Financing.

Key elements discussed during the workshop included outlining the project’s scope, establishing baselines for methane and carbon emissions at selected operation sites, collecting pertinent data from these sites, and ensuring Deloitte consultants comprehensively understand NNPC Ltd.’s operations and expectations.

Notably, OML 34, situated onshore in the Western Niger Delta and encompassing the Utorogu and Ughelli Fields, was unanimously selected as the operation site for the pilot stage of the project. Participants at the workshop, drawn from relevant NNPC Ltd. subsidiaries and departments, including Exploration & Production, New Energy, Gas Infrastructure, and Health, Safety, and Environment, expressed unanimous support for this strategic choice.

The technical training for the project is sponsored by the United States Department of State’s Bureau of Energy Resources through its Energy and Mineral Governance Programme (EMGP).
