NSCDC Cross River Cracks Down On Illegal Mining, Arrests 21 Suspects

NSCDC Cross River Cracks Down On Illegal Mining, Arrests 21 Suspects.

The Cross River State Government has intensified its fight against illegal mining with the arrest of 21 suspected illegal miners in a coordinated operation involving the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC). The operation, which spanned several days, took place across Biase, Yakurr, and Obubra Local Government Areas, targeting unauthorised mining activities that pose both economic and environmental threats.

Chairman of the State Anti-Illegal Mining Task Force, Prince Paul Okon Effiong, who led the enforcement team, described the operation as a significant milestone in the state’s ongoing efforts to regulate the mining sector and protect its natural resources.

“This operation is a clear message that the Cross River State Government, under the leadership of Governor Bassey Otu, will not tolerate illegal mining activities,” Effiong stated. “Our natural resources must be preserved for the benefit of all, not exploited unlawfully.”

He praised Governor Otu for creating an enabling environment that has empowered the task force and security agencies in carrying out their duties effectively. Effiong also acknowledged the support of the police, army, NSCDC, and Air Force, whose collaboration was vital to the success of the crackdown. He urged local leaders to remain vigilant and proactive in protecting their communities from illegal miners.

Dr Charles Brown, the NSCDC Commandant in Cross River State, paraded the suspects and reiterated the Corps’ commitment to combating illegal mining. He called on the public—especially those in mining-prone areas—to assist security agencies with credible intelligence.

“We need the cooperation of the people to fight this menace. If you see something, say something. These illegal activities are depriving the state and the nation of valuable resources,” Brown said.

He disclosed that most of the arrested suspects hail from northern Nigeria and cautioned against allowing Cross River to follow in the footsteps of other regions already suffering from security challenges linked to illegal mining.

“We have seen the devastating impact of illegal mining in other parts of the country, and we will not allow Cross River State to become a hotspot for such activities,” he warned. “Those involved should be prepared to face the full wrath of the law.”

Dr Brown also called on traditional rulers, chiefs, and opinion leaders to play an active role in protecting their communities. “The community belongs to you, and it is being desecrated. We need your support to stop these illegal activities,” he urged.

The suspects are expected to be charged in court soon. During the operation, security personnel recovered various mining tools, including shovels, diggers, pumping machines, boots, and hoses—underscoring the organised nature of the illegal activity.

This latest clampdown reflects a renewed determination by the Cross River State Government and security agencies to curb illegal mining and preserve the state’s environmental and economic integrity.
