Ogun State Government Allocates N16.5 Million To Boost National Sports Festival Preparation.

The Ogun State Government has approved a sum of N16.5 million to support 33 sports associations in preparation for the 22nd National Sports Festival, set to take place from 16 to 30 May in the state.

As part of the preparation, state athletes are expected to commence closed-door training immediately to ensure peak performance at the event.

The announcement was made by the Secretary to the Ogun State Government (SSG), Mr Tokunbo Talabi, during a stakeholder engagement at the June 12 Cultural Centre in Abeokuta. He stated that each of the 33 sports associations would receive N500,000 in support from the state government.

“I am delighted to announce that the Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has graciously approved the payment of N500,000 to each of the 33 sports associations participating in the festival,” Talabi said. “The Governor has also sanctioned the implementation of a new structure and process to drive the development of sports.”

He clarified that the funds were not to be seen as a financial bonus but as a means to ensure a smooth and effective preparation for the athletes. He added that the government would monitor the impact of the subvention and make necessary adjustments to ensure its effectiveness.

“It is important to account for these contributions. We will evaluate the feedback, and if positive, we may consider further support. However, this is not an opportunity for personal gain, which is why the Governor has placed responsibility on the Commissioner for Sports Development,” he explained.

Talabi also encouraged athletes to develop unique team chants and rituals, similar to those seen in rugby, to foster team spirit and motivation.

“The National Sports Festival offers Ogun State a platform to build a solid foundation for sports development. With the new sporting facilities in place, the state has reaffirmed its position as a leading hub for sports,” he noted.

He further urged the public to engage in constructive criticism rather than sensationalism, stressing that genuine feedback is welcomed, but misinformation on social media would not contribute to meaningful development.

In his remarks, the Commissioner for Sports Development, Hon. Wasiu Isiaka, revealed that a state-level version of the National Sports Festival would be held in late April, with two other states invited to enhance competitiveness. He also assured that outstanding athletes and associations would be rewarded for their performance.

As Ogun State prepares to host the prestigious sporting event, the government’s commitment to supporting athletes and strengthening sports development remains a priority.
