Osun JUSUN Reaffirms Strike Until All Demands Are Met

The Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) in Osun State has reaffirmed its ongoing strike, insisting it will continue until all welfare and promotion demands of its members are fully addressed.

The union stressed that the strike is aimed at compelling the state Judicial Service Commission to implement pending promotions and other agreed benefits for judiciary staff.

JUSUN’s Osun State chairman, Idris Adeniran, made this announcement while speaking to newsmen during a protest at the Osun High Court complex in Osogbo on Thursday. He emphasised that the union remains committed to ensuring that all its demands are met before calling off the strike. “We have contacted the JUSUN National President to negotiate on our behalf, which is the appropriate step at this stage,” Adeniran said.

The strike, which began on September 19, was launched to press for the consideration of staff promotions for 2024 and 2025. The union also demands that the National Judicial Institute organise capacity-building training for judiciary staff to improve service delivery across the state judiciary.

Adeniran noted that discussions with the state Chief Judge are ongoing, but no final agreement has been reached. He added that any negotiations will now be handled by the national body of JUSUN to prevent intimidation or harassment of members. “Until due process is followed, the strike remains in effect,” he stated.

While the state government has issued a circular for 2025 promotions, JUSUN insists that 2023 promotions, which were reversed by the Chief Judge, must also be ratified and implemented for all eligible staff. The union clarified that its actions are focused on internal judiciary matters and are not directed at the state government at large.

Supporting the union, the Osun State chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Christopher Arapasopo, urged the Chief Judge, Adepele Ojo, to reconsider her stance on the strike. He pointed out that while the Governor approved promotions for all state workers in 2024, judiciary staff are yet to receive their promotion letters.
