has been officially named the new Alaafin of Oyo by Governor Seyi Makinde, following a meticulous process involving traditional consultations and divinations by the Oyo kingmakers, known as the Oyomesi.

The announcement was made public on Friday by the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Dotun Oyelade, who confirmed that Governor Makinde has approved Owoade’s appointment. “The Oyomesi, after thorough consultations and divinations, have recommended Prince Abimbola Akeem Owoade as the new Alaafin of Oyo, and Governor Seyi Makinde has given his approval,” stated Oyelade.

The appointment marks the conclusion of the legal and social disputes that have lingered since the passing of the previous Alaafin, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III, in April 2022. The Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Ademola Ojo, expressed optimism that the new Alaafin’s enthronement would quell the controversies surrounding the late Oba’s death.

“This decision has resolved the socio-legal controversies that emerged after the transition of Oba Adeyemi. We urge the people of Oyo State to support the new Alaafin and celebrate this historic moment,” Ojo remarked.

In his statement, Oyelade expressed hopes for a peaceful, prosperous, and unified reign under the new Alaafin. “We pray that his reign brings progress and harmony to the people of Oyo and strengthens the historic legacy of the Alaafin institution,” he concluded.

The appointment of Prince Owoade not only signifies a new chapter for the Alaafin dynasty but also reflects the traditional and cultural adherence to royal succession in Oyo State. The community now looks forward to a period of stability and cultural continuity under their new monarch.
