Passengers aboard an American Airlines flight had a narrow escape when a fire broke out on the aircraft after landing at Denver International Airport, Colorado. Footage from the scene showed travellers huddled on the wing of the Boeing 737-800 while flames burned beneath the plane. Fortunately, all 172 passengers and six crew members were safely evacuated.
The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reported that the flight, which had taken off from Colorado Springs, was diverted to Denver at around 17:15 local time (23:15 GMT) after the crew detected “engine vibrations.” The aircraft caught fire while taxiing on the tarmac, prompting an emergency evacuation via inflatable slides.
American Airlines later confirmed that the incident was caused by an “engine-related issue.” The airline praised the crew for their swift response in ensuring all passengers disembarked safely. Meanwhile, the FAA has launched an investigation into the cause of the fire.
The incident has raised further concerns over aviation safety, particularly in light of recent air accidents in North America. A separate fatal crash in Washington, DC, involving a passenger plane and a US military helicopter, has sparked discussions on air traffic controller shortages and workplace pressures.
Adding to the concerns, President Donald Trump’s administration recently announced job cuts within the FAA as part of government cost-saving measures. These layoffs, which came just weeks after the Washington crash, affected several key positions, including maintenance mechanics, environmental compliance workers, and technical assistants.
Despite the incident, Denver International Airport authorities confirmed that the fire was swiftly contained and did not cause further delays for other flights. Passengers from the affected American Airlines flight expressed gratitude for the quick response of both the airline crew and emergency personnel, ensuring a safe evacuation.
