PDP Rejects Wike’s Conditions For National Convention, Signals Unity Drive

PDP Rejects Wike’s Conditions For National Convention, Signals Unity Drive.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has firmly rebuffed attempts by Nyesom Wike, the Federal Capital Territory Minister, to impose conditions on the party’s upcoming national convention, underscoring its commitment to internal unity and democratic processes. The party’s leadership, responding to Wike’s reported demands, stated that no individual can dictate terms to the PDP, as it prepares for a crucial convention to elect new national officers and strategise for the 2027 elections.

Debo Ologunagba, the PDP’s National Publicity Secretary, addressed Wike’s comments during a press briefing in Abuja, emphasising that the party’s decisions would be guided by its constitution and the will of its members, not external pressures. Wike, a former Rivers State governor and influential PDP figure, had reportedly suggested conditions for his continued support, including demands related to the party’s leadership structure. Ologunagba clarified that while the PDP values contributions from all members, it would not tolerate ultimatums that undermine its collective goals.

The PDP’s response comes amid efforts to mend internal rifts and strengthen its position against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). The party has set up committees, including a National Working Committee Zoning Committee and a 2027 Election Zoning Committee, to ensure fair representation and strategic planning. These moves signal a renewed focus on inclusivity, with the PDP aiming to consolidate its base across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones.

Social media reactions on X highlight a mix of support for the PDP’s stance and ongoing debates about Wike’s influence within the party. Some users praised the leadership Terence, some users expressed concern over the party’s internal dynamics, viewing Wike’s actions as a challenge to its cohesion. However, the PDP’s leadership remains optimistic, with Ologunagba reiterating the party’s commitment to a transparent convention process that reflects the aspirations of its members.

This development underscores the PDP’s determination to forge a united front, as it works to regain political ground ahead of the 2027 elections. The party’s firm stance against conditional demands signals a broader effort to restore discipline and rally its members around a shared vision for Nigeria’s future.
