Manchester City overcame a stubborn Nottingham Forest side to reduce Arsenal’s lead at the top.
Manchester City marked Pep Guardiola’s 300th Premier League (PL) game as manager with a hard-earned 2-0 victory against relegation-threatened Nottingham Forest.
This win brought City within one point of league leaders Arsenal, who had played one more game.
The match started with City, the reigning champions, showing early intent. Kevin De Bruyne tested Nottingham Forest’s goalkeeper Matz Sels, while Jérémy Doku narrowly missed the target. Forest responded with Neco Williams creating a chance that tested City’s goalkeeper Ederson.
However, Forest’s efforts were nullified when City executed a well-worked set-piece routine. De Bruyne’s precise corner found Joško Gvardiol, who headed the ball into the net for his second PL goal, giving City the lead just after the half-hour mark.
As the first half progressed, Forest came close to equalizing from a set-piece situation, but Murillo’s effort went over the bar. Ederson, who had been busy in goal, had to be substituted at halftime due to injury, with Stefan Ortega replacing him.
In the second half, Forest increased their pressure, with Gvardiol making a crucial block to deny Chris Wood from scoring. Guardiola responded by bringing on Erling Haaland, who made an immediate impact. Haaland found the back of the net within nine minutes of his introduction, securing his 21st goal of the PL season and sealing City’s first league double over Forest since 1990/91.
The victory kept City’s title hopes alive, while Forest remained precariously close to the relegation zone.
