President Tinubu Awards National Honours To Notable Nigerians In Democracy Day Ceremony.

In a significant gesture marking Democracy Day 2025, President Bola Tinubu has posthumously conferred the Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (CFR) on Alhaja Kudirat Abiola, recognising her contributions to Nigeria’s political history. The announcement was part of a broader ceremony in which numerous individuals and groups were awarded national honours for their roles in shaping the nation’s democratic journey.

The event, held in Abuja, spotlighted a diverse group of Nigerians, both deceased and living, who have influenced the country’s political landscape. Among the posthumous recipients, Alhaja Kudirat Abiola, who was tragically killed in 1996, was acknowledged for her activism. Other notable figures included Shehu Musa Yar’Adua, awarded the Grand Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (GCFR), and Ken Saro-Wiwa, who received the Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON) for his environmental and social advocacy.

Posthumous Recognitions

The posthumous awards covered a range of contributions. Alongside Abiola, CFR recipients included Alhaji Balarabe Musa, Pa. Alfred Rewane, and Chief Bola Ige. The CON was awarded to individuals such as Prof. Humphrey Nwosu, Rear Admiral Ndubuisi Kanu, and Dr. Beko Ransome-Kuti. Others, including Bagauda Kaltho and Chima Ubani, were conferred the Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) for their efforts.

Living Figures Honoured

Among the living, Nobel Laureate Prof. Wole Soyinka was awarded the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON). Prominent individuals such as Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah, Barrister Femi Falana, SAN, and Senator Shehu Sani received the CON, while media figures like Kunle Ajibade and Dapo Olorunyomi were awarded the OON for their contributions to journalism and public discourse.

National Assembly Leaders Recognised

The ceremony also acknowledged current democratic leaders. Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Speaker Abbas Tajudeen were decorated with the GCON, while Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau and Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu received the CFR, reflecting prior conferments.

Mixed Reactions and Context

The awards coincided with President Tinubu’s public address, where he reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to democratic principles and dismissed concerns about a one-party state. However, the event was marred by reports of journalists being denied access to the National Assembly chamber ahead of the president’s speech, prompting criticism from media groups.

The conferment of these honours highlights Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to recognise individuals who have shaped its democratic and social fabric, though opinions on the recipients’ contributions remain varied.
