President Tinubu Praises General Yakubu Gowon On His 90th Birthday.
President Bola Tinubu has paid tribute to former military head of state, General Yakubu Gowon (rtd), in celebration of his 90th birthday. In a statement released on Saturday, Tinubu described Gowon as a “gentleman extraordinaire” who has made significant contributions to Nigeria’s development.
Acknowledging Gowon’s lengthy service, Tinubu noted that the elder statesman is one of the longest-serving leaders in Nigeria’s history, having played a vital role both within the military and in national governance. Trained as a brilliant officer at Sandhurst, Gowon reluctantly assumed leadership of the country at the age of 32, a journey that has continued to inspire many Nigerians.
During his tenure as head of state, Gowon oversaw critical nation-building efforts. His renowned philosophy of “No victor, no vanquished,” following Nigeria’s civil war, played a crucial role in fostering national peace, healing, and reconciliation. Tinubu hailed this approach as a cornerstone in restoring unity during one of the country’s most difficult periods.
The president further commended Gowon for his remarkable legacy in establishing the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in 1975, which has since grown into a key regional organisation for economic and political cooperation.
Reflecting on his own leadership, Tinubu expressed gratitude for Gowon’s ongoing counsel, highlighting the former head of state’s willingness to provide advice and guidance when needed.
